The
The
Highbury Barn dates back to beyond the 18th Century and in 1899
was sold for £92 5 shillings and 5 pence. The original 'Bill of
Sale' is framed in the lounge bar.
This
included the pub, brewery, 1 gallon of rum, 3/4 case of minerals
and 1/2 a cake. By the early 1970's the pub was extended into what
you see today.

There
is rumoured to have once been a secret tunnel from the cellar
through to the Abbas Hall area of Cornard, once belonging to the
Convent of the Blessed Virgin and used by monks to gain entrance
to the pub. This area of Gt Cornard, once known as the Manor of
Cornard Magna was even mentioned as in the Doomsday Book.
